What Is a Container Storage Yard and How Is It Different From Self Storage?

What Is a Container Storage Yard and How Is It Different From Self Storage?
A container storage yard rents you two things. A steel shipping container, and the ground it sits on.
Self storage rents you one thing. A room inside a building.
The ground is the whole difference. It is where the truck parks, where the trailer turns around, and where the crew loads out in the morning.
The five things that actually change
You drive in. Back the truck up to the container doors and load. No corridor, no cart, no elevator. A pallet jack works. A hand truck works.
No height limit. Yards are open to the sky. A bucket truck clears. A dump trailer with the bed up clears. Covered drive aisles at a storage facility do not.
You get in whenever. Coded gate, 24 hours, seven days. Snow removal crews care about this more than anyone. When it starts coming down at 3am you need the plow truck, not an office that opens at nine.
Vehicles and tools live at the same address. Park the truck, lock the tools in the box next to it, take one gate code. You are not driving to a storage unit and then to wherever the trailer is parked.
You rent by the month. Both options do this, so it is a wash.
What it costs at each size
Container yard | Self storage | |
160 sq ft | $180 to $200 (20 foot container) | Roughly a 10x16 unit |
320 sq ft | $325 to $350 (40 foot container) | Roughly a 10x30 unit |
With yard space | From $525 | Not available |
The square footage is close. What you can do with it is not. Current pricing by yard is on the availability page.
When self storage is the better answer
Be honest about this. If you are storing anything that cares about temperature, take the unit. Adhesives, sealants and some finishes have a limit printed on the label, and a steel box through a Colorado July will pass it.
If you want a building with cameras, staff and a locked front door, take the unit. A yard is fenced and gated but it is not supervised, and the lease says Box Yard is not liable for theft. Carry your own coverage. More on judging a yard in what to look for in a secure contractor storage yard.
If you need less than 100 square feet and no vehicle access, take the unit. A container is more space than you need.
When the yard is the better answer
If a truck, a trailer or a piece of equipment is part of the picture, the yard wins and it is not close. Self storage has nowhere to put them.
That covers most trades. Plumbers with long pipe. Electricians with vans and conduit. Tree services with chippers. Roofers with dump trailers. Junk removal and moving companies with box trucks.
